Why we cover these five brands together
Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda and Audi all belong to the same group and share platforms, electronics and security systems. A Golf, a León, an Octavia and an A3 from the same year effectively use the same key technology, even though the casing and the badge are different. That’s why a locksmith who works well with one of them works just as well with the others, and why we’ve grouped them together in this guide.
What does change is the car’s generation. Since 2013 there have been two main stages, and it helps to know which one your car belongs to, because the programming process is not the same.
Models we work with
This list is a guide: if your car isn’t on it, or your version sits on the boundary between two generations, tell us the model and year and send us a photo of the key, and we’ll confirm straight away.
First stage: 2013 to 2019 models
| Brand | Models |
|---|---|
| Volkswagen | Golf 7 (2013–2019) · Passat B8 (2015–2019) · Tiguan II (2016–2019) · Touran II (2016–2020) · T-Roc (2018–2019) · Polo AW (2018–2019) · Arteon (2017–2019) |
| SEAT | León 5F (2017–2019) · Ateca (2017–2019) · Arona (2018–2020) · Ibiza KJ (2018–2020) · Tarraco (2019–2020) |
| Škoda | Octavia III (2013–2019) · Superb III (2015–2019) · Kodiaq (2017–2019) · Karoq (2017–2019) |
| Audi | A3 8V (2013–2019) · Q2 (2017–2019) · Q3 8U (up to 2019) · A1 GB (2019–2020) |
Current stage: 2020 models onwards
| Brand | Models |
|---|---|
| Volkswagen | Golf 8 · Polo · T-Roc · T-Cross · Tiguan · Passat · Arteon · Touran · Caddy · Jetta · ID.3 · ID.4 · ID.5 · ID.7 · ID. Buzz |
| SEAT | León 4 · Ateca · Tarraco · Ibiza · Arona |
| CUPRA | Formentor · León · Born |
| Škoda | Octavia IV · Superb · Karoq · Kodiaq · Kamiq · Scala · Fabia IV |
| Audi | A3 8Y · Q3 · Q4 e-tron |
On some models the change of stage doesn’t match the exact year: there are Ibiza and Arona models from 2018, and Passat, Touran, Superb, Karoq or Kodiaq models from 2020 onwards, that may use one system or the other depending on the version. Don’t worry: just ask us, we’ll identify it with the car in front of us and tell you what it needs.
The electric models (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, ID. Buzz, CUPRA Born and Audi Q4 e-tron) use the same key technology as the rest of the group’s current models, so they’re on the list too.
Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda and Audi key types
Flip key with remote. The most common type across the whole range since 2013: a metal blade that folds into the remote, two or three buttons and an immobiliser chip inside. Cutting the blade isn’t enough: the chip has to be programmed so the car recognises it, and the remote has to be coded so it locks and unlocks the car.
Keyless entry key (Kessy / keyless). On higher trim levels and on almost all current models, the car unlocks and starts without taking the key out of your pocket. If your car has keyless entry, let us know when you call and we’ll confirm what we can do for your specific model.
Emergency key. All keyless models have a metal blade hidden inside the remote so you can open the door if the battery runs flat. We can copy that blade too.
When do you need a spare key?
- You only have one key. This is the most common situation and the riskiest: if you lose it, the cost and the time needed to sort it out multiply. A second key is the cheapest back-up you can have.
- A second-hand car with only one key. Very common on the Costa del Sol. As well as making a copy, it’s a good idea to delete the previous keys so that nobody can start the car with a key that went astray along the way.
- A faulty remote or broken casing. Buttons that don’t respond, a loose blade or a cracked casing: sometimes a new casing is enough, other times a new key is the better option. We’ll tell you once we’ve seen it.
- A shared car. Partners, family, employees or a company vehicle.
What if you’ve lost all your keys?
We can sort that too, and on these models there’s no need to replace the lock or the control unit. We generate a new key from the vehicle’s data, program it into the car and delete the lost keys from the system, so that if they turn up —or someone else finds them— they can’t be used to start it.
It takes longer than a copy, although it’s usually sorted the same day. You’ll need to prove that the car is yours: we ask for your ID and, once the car is open, the vehicle registration document. We do this in Fuengirola and Mijas, wherever your car has been left. You’ll find all the details on our total car key loss service in Fuengirola.
How we copy your key
- We identify the car and the key. Make, model, year and version; that tells us which chip, which remote and which process it needs.
- We cut the blade with precision machinery, from your current key or from the vehicle’s code if you don’t have one.
- We program the chip and the remote in the car itself, using equipment designed specifically for the Volkswagen Group.
- We test everything: starting, central locking, boot and, if it has one, the emergency blade.
We come to you in a fully equipped workshop van, so you don’t have to move the car or take it anywhere. In most cases we sort it out in a single visit.
Locksmith or dealer: what’s the difference?
At the dealer the key is usually ordered from the factory, with an appointment and several days’ wait, and you also have to get the car there (or have it towed, if you have no key at all). A specialist automotive locksmith does the same job in your street, on the same day and with a guarantee. The key is programmed into the vehicle exactly like an original, and your other keys keep working.
Whichever you choose, our one recommendation is to make sure the service includes full programming (chip and remote) and deletion of any lost keys.
How much does a Volkswagen, SEAT, Škoda or Audi key copy cost?
It depends on three things: the car’s model and generation, the type of key (with remote or keyless) and whether it’s a copy or a new key after total loss. Tell us what car you have and we’ll give you a fixed price before we start, with no surprise call-out charges or hidden costs.

Frequently asked questions
Can you copy the key for my Golf, León or Octavia without the original?
Yes. If you have no key at all, we generate a new one from the car’s data and program it into the vehicle. This is our total key loss service: all we need is your ID and, once the car is open, the vehicle registration document.
Does the copy work just like one from the dealer?
Yes. It is programmed into the car’s control unit with exactly the same functions as the original: starting, central locking and remote. Your other keys keep working as normal.
My car is from 2020 and I’m not sure whether it’s a “current generation” model. What should I do?
Tell us the model, year and version, or send us a photo of the key and the registration document on WhatsApp. We’ll identify it and tell you exactly what it needs.
Do you copy keys for electric models such as the ID.3, ID.4 or CUPRA Born?
Yes. They use the same key system as the group’s current petrol and diesel models, so the process is the same.
What about keyless entry keys (Kessy)?
When you call, let us know that your car has keyless entry and give us the exact model, and we’ll confirm what we can do for it.
I bought my car second-hand and only got one key. What do you recommend?
Get a copy made and, during the same visit, delete any old keys that may still be registered to the car. That way you can be sure only your keys can start it.
How long does it take?
A standard copy is done in a single visit. Total key loss takes a little longer because the key has to be generated from scratch, but it is usually sorted the same day.
Do you come out to Mijas, Benalmádena or Marbella?
Yes. We are based in Fuengirola and cover Mijas and the rest of the Costa del Sol, coming to wherever you are.
A second key for your Volkswagen, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda or Audi costs far less than being left without one. If you need a copy, or you’ve already lost your key, give us a call and we’ll make it wherever your car is.
